At the 2023 IBJJF World Championships, Gabriela Pessanha of Infight JJ cemented herself as the greatest women's black belt in the world with a double gold, history-making performance. With five fights, five wins, and five submissions, Gabi became the first woman to both win three straight double golds and to submit her way through both brackets at the black belt level.

The 2023 IBJJF World Championships have officially concluded and history has been made. The 2023 IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu World Championships showcased some of the best grapplers in the world during an action-packed weekend at The Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif.

Art Of Jiu-Jitsu has one of the strongest competition teams in gi jiu-jitsu, and this year’s team at Pans is one of their largest yet. While AOJ has been deep for years at the colored belt ranks, its black belt squad is now formidable across several weight categories. AOJ's black belt Pans squad features homegrown rookie talent, established veterans in the AOJ backbone, and a few new recruits hopeful to contribute to the Costa Mesa team's success.

BJJ Stars is set to return in Brazil and on FloGrappling on Friday, October 21 for a lightweight grand prix. The eight-man gi bracket, dedicated to the memory of Leandro Lo, will feature two IBJJF world champions, and a battery of top contenders hungry to make their mark on the division.

This year's IBJJF World Championships was one of the most highly anticipated of all time. And it delivered, with amazing matchups, budding rivalries, and hours of great jiu-jitsu. The most anticipated gi tournament of the year returns to the iconic Walter Pyramid in just a few days time, and it is no exaggeration to say that this is one of the most competitive editions of the tournament in its rich 25-year history.

Only one of the ten men’s black belt champions at 2021 Worlds represented a country other than Brazil. The lone non-Brazilian champion was 4x black belt gi world champion Mikey Musumeci (USA), who won his fourth title defeating Bruno Malfacine 6-0 by points. This year, a slew of veterans and rookies alike are lined up for their shot at gold, and the roster of non-Brazilians is showing signs that this year’s podiums could be the most nationally diverse in history.

The penultimate ADCC Trials event is now complete and the total amount of competitors confirmed for Worlds in September stands at over 85%. One of Europe's top P4P black belts, Tommy Langaker came out of nowhere to claim his spot in the 77kg division. He'll join South American Trials winner Mica Galvao, who was busy in Brazil winning his first major IBJJF title as a black belt. What was a dream match-up suddenly became very possible.

The return of Worlds, the growth of WNO, and the emergence of a new generation of champion grapplers– just a handful of the high points of a rollercoaster 12-month period that rarely took its foot off the gas pedal. Purple belt Joao Ribeiro was the only US representative to take first place in any adult division of this year’s 13th edition of the Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championships. The 120 kg champion of GF Team, Ribeiro won five matches — including two submission victories — on his road to gold.
