The ultra-competitive 85kg division final is set for November 18. at the Abu Dhabi Rio de Janeiro Grand Slam.
The first day of action at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rio saw adult & masters purple belts take over the Arena Carioca 1 with a thrilling day of jiu-jitsu.
Mayssa Bastos (GFTeam) and Gabrieli Pessanha (Infight) are currently tied for second place in the UAEJJF women’s brown/black belt rankings with 400 points after both taking gold at the Grand Slams in Tokyo and Los Angeles. With first place Larissa Paes not registered for Rio, both women have a shot at taking over the top spot in the UAEJJF.
The largest black belt bracket for Rio is at 77 kg, with 31 registered athletes.

The 69 kg bracket is an insanely deep 24 competitor bracket with no clear favorite. Included in the division are Rafael Mansur (NS Brotherhood), Alexssandro Sodre (Clube Feijao), Joao Mendes (Atos), Isaque Paiva (Saikoo), Alexandre Vieira (BTT), Richar Nogueira (Cicero Costha), Victor Moraes (Cicero Costha) and Yago Rodrigues (CTMR).
Erberth Santos looked like his old self at the ADGS Los Angeles and King of Mats in September. He'll need to stay that way to win the 110kg division in Rio.
The 94 kg bracket contains two of the 2017-18 season’s top ten competitors as well as the last two World brown belt open class champs.
The 2018-19 UAEJJF points race looks to be a two-man competition between ZR team members Joao Gabriel Sousa (960 points) and Diego Ramalho (920 points).
The 2018 Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rio De Janeiro kicks off Nov. 16 -18 and features some of the very best athletes based in Brazil and from around the world – but no division seems to be as STACKED as the 94kg Adult Black Belt, which we've come to lovingly term the 'Group of Death'.
