Defending -77kg champion Lucas Lepri was knocked out in the first round of the 2016 Abu Dhabi World Pro in a controversial match with Luan Carvalho that originally the 2015 gold medallist declared the winner.

The result was later overturned after officials declared that an error in communication between the referee and the scoreboard operator saw Lepri wrongly granted victory. The decision was overturned and Luan Carvalho was declared the winner.
