FINALS UPDATES

  • And we're off with the second South American Trials. Each winner gets a spot at the ADCC Worlds in August. We're beginning with the women's weights, then men's +99 and down.
  • Men's -66kg: Fabricio Andrey vs Kaua Gabriel
    • Our main event of the evening. Kaua strikes first with an uncharacteristic double leg in his second Trials final in as many weeks. Fabricio quickly wrestles his way back up. We're into points, Fabricio on top working a knee slide. He breaks through and Kaua turtles. Fabricio falls off on the back take and they reset to Kaua playing guard. Kaua gets a short bite on a leg but Fabricio clears well. Fabricio uses a leg pin to drag far side, he's into a side body lock now. Kaua is able to reset. We hit overtime. Both men trading shots but strong head hands defense both ways. It's Andrey moving forward. Fabricio is able to spin behind a shot, and on his back take ends up on a rear triangle. He focuses on the arm, and Kaua taps the MOMENT time expires, but it won't count. Decision time. Fabricio! Heading back to ADCC!
  • Men's -77kg: Jonnatas Gracie vs Alexandre Joaquim de Jesus
    • Crowd is chanting for Robinho (Alexandre) before the match begins. Heavy collar ties both ways to start, and underhooks. Gracie gets a high single, then dumps Robinho down for top position (no points yet). Alexandre manages to create space, wrestle up to a front headlock, then clear. Now Robinho manages to nearly get Gracie down with his own front headlock. We're now in points. Robinho shoots, Gracie grabs the neck, but has to bail to turtle. Robinho tries to follow but Gracie gets on top in the scramble. No points. Heavy wrestling exchanges from both men, trying to open up their opponent and pick their spot. Crowd still chanting for Robinho, we're in OT. Robinho explodes into a deep double but Gracie is right out before they even hit the mat. It's Jonnatas moving forward for most of the fight but Robinho has had his moments. That's the end of regulation, another decision. They give it to Robinho! He's back to back Trials champion and his teammates and friends storm the mat.
  • Men's -88kg: Gabriel Almeida vs Pedro Marinho
    • One of the most anticipated finals. Marinho gets top position first, bullying his way forward with a body lock. Now he works from top knee shield while Almeida is trying to control wrists and sink underhooks. Marinho now trying to be heavier on the head but Almeida finds the single leg X until Marinho clears back to the half butterfly with backwards pressure. Marinho gets warned for too much hands to the face. Almeida gets another look at a leg lock but Marinho clears again. Into points. Almeida wrestles up but the guillotine threat is too much and he has to bail - and roll several times to escape danger. Now Almeida drops into a heel hook attempt, Marinho counters with his own ankle lock, then Almeida wrestles up but Pedro scrambles free. Great action here but both men feeling the pace. Pedro is able to use a guillotine attempt to get to the turtle, where Almeida rolls to guard. Pedro trying to slice through the knee shield but can't, eventually Gabriel creates space and stands back up. We're wrestling, tied 0-0. A headbutt leads to a stoppage, there's some blood. This has been a war. Almeida got cut on Pedro's teeth. They come back for the last 30 seconds, fight hard, and that's it. Decision time. Could be either way. The judges go... Pedro Marinho! The top ranked 205lb grappler is going to ADCC Worlds.
  • Men's -99kg: Elionai Braz vs Henrique Ceconi
    • Braz is first to strike, driving Ceconi off the mat with a single leg. They are wrestling with a medium pace, picking their spots. Ceconi finds his, getting behind Braz and putting him down with a biggg mat return. During points, he does sink the hooks to go up 3-0. Braz clears the hooks, but Ceconi is sticky on the rear body lock. Braz keeps building back up to a quad pod. Ceconi scores another back take, but Braz escapes again to a rear body lock. Finally he escapes and Braz needs something big to come back from 6-0. Time expires and Ceconi is heading back to ADCC Worlds!
  • Men's +99kg: Victor Honorio vs Matheus Lino
    • The heavyweights are up now. First big action is a takedown drive from Honorio that takes them across several mats. He follows that up with another one, no brakes on the big man. This time though he follows through enough to land in top half guard. Still in no points period though. Honorio uses a hip switch to pass, he's a great combination of pressure and agility on top. He mounts and is scoring points now. Lino is able to put him back into guard, Honorio passes again. It's back to mount and Honorio is like an avalanche. Time will expire and he is off to Worlds.
  • Women's -55kg: Franciele dos Santos vs Ana Rodrigues
    • It's Ana moving forward early but neither can maintain a solid grip. Referee calling for action as they lace fingers and push into each other. We're into points without much substantive action yet. Ana digging in with underhooks but anything serious keeps getting cleared fast. Finally ARod pulls down Franciele, forcing her to turtle. After a few minutes there, Ana can't convert it into anything and dos Santos is back up. Into overtime. Both women trying to dig underhooks, Fran moving forward a lot more than she was before. Fight ends and the crowd is on their feet appreciating the action. The decision goes to... Ana Rodrigues, she is going to ADCC!
  • Women's -65kg: Gabi McComb vs Ana Carolina Vieira
    • Pair of world class grapplers here but only one spot available. Ana quick to the single leg, Gabi tries to guillotine but she doesn't get it. No points tho, too early. McComb is working on entering the legs from half butterfly, no bites yet tho as ACV stays positionally disciplined. ACV works to a stack, but ends up giving space and Gabi stands back up. We're wrestling. ACV counters a jump from Gabi with a body lock, transitions to a back take - Gabi escapes but a quick shot from her results in a guillotine for Vieira! Ana Carolina Vieira is heading to ADCC 2024.
  • Women's +65kg: Maria Ruffato vs Kauane Silva Ramos
    • This one has the makings of a scrap all over it. Kauane being heavy on the collar tie. She steps in for a trip, gets top position, but Ruffato goes right to the 50/50 where they are both threatening with leg locks. Ruffato aggressive on the legs, looking at inside heel hooks, then kneebars. She finally breaks through in the outside ashi by securing the toe hold/kneebar combo - it's a submission in the final and Maria Ruffato wins both trials and is off to ADCC Worlds!

  • Gabi McComb and Leilani Bernales are going on mat 4, they are both super hard nosed but it's McComb walking her down early in the match and looking to snatch the neck. Leilani tries to roll free in a scramble and ends up stuck in an armbar, there's the tap. McComb in the finals!
  • In a battle of teammates, Franciele dos Santos continues her unexpected run with a submission win with only seconds left. She's into the finals at -55kg.
  • At +65kg, Maria Ruffato makes her second Trials finals in 2 weekends with a 90 second sub over Juliana. She's been so scrappy on the ADCC mats. Tamiris and Kauane are now facing off for the other spot, Tamiris has the closed guard and is working from bottom. They stand after a scramble and now it's points. This one will be decided on the feet. Tamiris shoots, Kauane reshoots, fights off the guillotine, and ends up on top with the double leg & 2 points. Tamiris is working so hard, scrambles back up, but not enough in time. Kauane in the finals!
  • Hokage is on the mat facing Felipe Machado, the semifinals at -66kg have begun. Felipe pulls early but keeps popping back up. WHAT Fabricio just hit the submission of the day (year?) with a big flying armbar from a wrestling exchange! You gotta check this one out.

  • At -88kg, Marinho is now out to take on Bahiense and Pofirio/Almeida is on Mat 4. Andre and Gabriel trading leg locks early, both have been so vicious this weekend with submissions. Almeida is rolling now, gaining momentum. He nearly crucifixes Andre, then transitions to a deep kimura attempt before sinking hooks at the end. The refs are talking about it after regulation ends, right now there's no points for the back take. They are going to the tape to review. They decide the hook was out and we continue. Almeida begins regulation and leaves no doubt - he scores a guillotine in 29 seconds to advance to the finals. He will face Marinho, who wins over Bahiense by a single penalty.

  • Kaua Gabriel does it again - he has a teammate in the semifinal and scores the straight ankle lock win. You cannot let this guy get a hold of your ankle. He's back to another Trials final, against Fabricio this time.
  • At -99, big strong guys Gaudio and Ceconi are on the mat and making a big impact every time they come together. Ceconi times a beautiful double and catches Gaudio on his heels for the takedown (but during no points). We're into points now with Gaudio playing open guard, both men breathing hard. We're into the overtime, it's become a war of attrition. Hard collar ties, big shoves, running each other into the table. Very physical. A big shot from Gaudio puts them way out of bounds and into the production table, and the crowd loves it (production staff, less so). They battle to the end, embrace in mutual respect, and it'll be a judge's decision win for... Ceconi!

He keeps looking for the choke until time expires and he gets his win, into the finals.
  • Robinho and Samuel Rocha are out for the last semifinal, in a quick but exciting round of action. Robinho passes early and may have the arm but loses it. Robinho's passing is on point today - he scores twice in the first minute of regulation to go up 6-0 and is being very heavy on top. He keeps pouring it on, eventually winning on points 11-0.
