Estevan Martinez and Diogo Reis are two of the most exciting grapplers around, making their upcoming matchup on Tezos WNO a can't miss.
Tezos WNO: Gordon Ryan vs Felipe Pena presented by Fat Tire is coming to Dallas, TX on August 7, and will feature five main card bouts as well as two free undercard matchups.
Diogo Reis, a 20 year old from Brazil will face the no-gi world champ Estevan Martinez on the undercard of Sunday’s event. In an interview for FloGrappling, the Melqui Galvao athlete, Reis, praised his opponent and promised that the fight would be filled with movement and scrambles.
Based on the track record of both athletes for high work rate, fans have high expectations for the match between Reis and Martinez, which has been called the possible fight of the night. The Brazilian athlete said he believed it was possible to earn FOTN against Martinez, and analyzed his technical abilities.
“I believe it will be a very exciting match mainly because of my style,” said Reis. “I like to fight forward, and I don't like to leave it up to the judges. I like to fight strategically, while my opponent is more explosive. I will be looking for the submission all the time.”
Reis has been successful recently, and has won his past two tournaments. The first was the ADCC Trials in Brazil and the second was Polaris, a team competition in London.
Reis will be making his WNO debut against Martinez this weekend. He said this competition will be like a thermometer to measure his preparation for the upcoming ADCC World Championships. To prepare for Sunday’s Tezos WNO match, Reis worked his strength and conditioning every day, studied matches and practiced mental exercises.
But a win for Reis won’t come easy. His opponent, Martinez, is a veteran at WNO and this will be his third time competing at the event. Martinez, 29, has been training for 12 years. He is from Albuquerque, New Mexico but is currently living in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he teaches Jiu Jitsu daily.
Martinez is the reigning IBJJF No-Gi Pan and No-Gi Worlds roosterweight champion.
When asked about his expectations for the match against Reis, Martinez said that it was hard to predict how it would go.
“I have mostly been focusing on my wrestling,'' said Martinez “I'm looking to show improvements in this area. I know it will be a fast pace from start to finish. My expectation for this match is that it will be exciting and entertain the audience.”
