In the opening match, purple belts Elder Cruz and Jacob Couch will try to settle the score from a back and forth 2020 IBJJF season. Cruz, “El Monstro” got the better of the last exchange, winning a referee decision in a scoreless match over Couch at American Nationals in December.

The results of that match didn’t sit well with either competitor, so they’re settling things in the opening match at WNO.

“El Monstro” Cruz, from Checkmat, has a wrestling background, and he put that to use when the IBJJF returned last fall, collecting heavyweight and open weight titles in several tournaments.

Couch, “The Hillbilly Hammer,” is a super heavyweight with his share of open weight titles, including one from No-Gi Pans. He first gained notoriety in Daisy Fresh Ep. 3 as one of the most colorful personalities of the Pedigo Submission Fighting squad. But he’s sustained it with impressive jiu-jitsu. He has a recent submission win over ADCC silver medalist Jared Dopp.

These two competitors are aggressive, and hungry to climb the ranks. They’re sure to get this event started with exactly the display of jiu-jitsu we want to see on WNO.

Afterwards, two top-ranked strawweights will compete in the featured free prelim. The no. 4-ranked strawweight, Art Of Jiu-Jitsu’s Jessa Khan, will make her black belt debut against Danielle Kelly, of Silver Fox/Renzo Gracie.

Kelly is a submission only, and no-gi specialist, with experience at the ADCC trials as well as EBI. Experience will be her biggest advantage over Khan, a prodigy of one of the toughest teams around. In Khan’s last match as a brown belt, she had no. 1-ranked strawweight Mayssa Bastos in a deep triangle threat, before eventually losing by a two-point margin.

Kelly, the no. 7-ranked strawweight, could make a huge leap in the rankings with a win over Khan. Whoever wins is likely next in contention for the top-ranked Bastos and the no. 2-ranked Grace Gundrum. There’s a lot on the line even in the undercard at Who’s Number One.
