Five World Champs On Heavyweight Grand Prix Roster For BJJ STARS V

BJJ Stars returns to FloGrappling with a Heavyweight Grand Prix which is sure to be electric. Eight of the most explosive Brazilian heavyweights will take their shots at a massive cash prize.

The tournament will feature four IBJJF world champions, and could give us rematches from some of the most exciting matchups in history.

Those champions are:

Two-time ADCC champion Yuri Simoes will also be involved, competing for the first time since 2019. Rounding out the bracket are two long-time heavyweight contenders, Luiz Panza and  Gutemberg Pereira and one new black belt, Erich Munis.

How Will The Brackets Be Seeded?

Each of the world champions will take their own corner of the eight man bracket, and the remaining four competitors will draw names to fill in the bracket at random.

What’s At Stake?

There’s a huge monetary prize on the line, 100 thousand Reais — equivalent to more than $18,000. But that shouldn’t overshadow the equally important title of Grand Prix Champion for these athletes. Many of these competitors have storied rivalries.

Meregali has beaten six of his seven possible opponents, and has developed a tense relationship with Erberth Santos. Santos could be a huge wild card, as he's been hot and cold against many of the competitors in this tournament. Felipe Pena will also be looking to settle the score with Meregali, and to reestablish his dominance among the heavyweights. But with a few key victories, Barbosa could break out and pronounce at the top of the heap at heavyweight.

The Darkhorse

Erich Munis is a darkhorse in this bracket. He earned his black belt in September 2020, and earned a huge victory at the last edition of BJJ Stars with a win over Victor Hugo. He went undefeated in 2020, and, in his 2021 debut, has an opportunity to prove he’s the next big thing among the best heavyweights in the world.

BJJ Stars will also feature six superfights:
