IBJJF Will Not Hold A World Championships In 2020
After weeks of deliberation, the IBJJF has officially announced that it will not hold the 25th edition of the World Championships in 2020.
After weeks of deliberation, the IBJJF has officially announced that it will not hold the 25th edition of the World Championships in 2020.
Last month, the federation announced dates for the 2020 Masters Worlds, and said it would determine whether or not to host the adult tournament as of November 10.
The final decision not to hold the tournament was largely due to the current COVID-related US border restrictions, which forbid entrance to travelers from Brazil, China and several European countries.
Masters Worlds is scheduled to continue as originally planned in Orlando, Fl from December 14-20.
"The IBJJF regrets to inform that unfortunately, there will not be a 2020 World Adult Championship Gi & 2020 World No-Gi Championship. Due to the extreme difficulties of travel challenges, including forbidden entry into the United States faced by the organization and athletes, these events can not come to fruition. The IBJJF will continue to work diligently to bring the competition calendar back to normal as much as possible next year and will post updates on future events accordingly."
The IBJJF has traditionally held the World Championships during the last week of May in Long Beach, CA. This will be the first time the tournament has not occurred since its inaugural year in 1996.
There are currently five events still listed on the IBJJF upcoming schedule in 2020. No-Gi Pans and the Atlanta Open will be held on November 21-22. Those events are no longer available for registration, as they have reached capacity.
The Houston Open is scheduled for November 14, and is also closed. American Nationals will have gi and no-gi divisions and will take place in Dallas from Dec 4-6. Those events are still open for registration. As previously noted, Masters Worlds will be held in Orlando from December 14-20 and is currently open for registration.
All five tournaments will be streamed live on FloGrappling.
