Main Event: Romulo Barral vs Tanner Rice
Reid: One thing I love about this pandemic is that it’s getting tons of competitors on the Fight to Win stage that in normal circumstances wouldn’t be there. And this weekend we’ve got another first for the biggest party in grappling and that means adding Romulo Barral to the list of legends that have thrown down on the raised stage.
He’ll be squaring off against Tanner Rice who is as game as they come and even has a number of very impressive wins on Fight to Win but despite Tanner’s record it’s very hard to pick against the Gracie Barra Northridge head honcho.
Romulo has graced us with countless great matches over the years and doesn’t need to prove anything on friday night. But alas he chooses to entertain the grappling community with what will no doubt be another legendary performance from the Gracie Barra legend.
Prediction: Romulo Barral via cross choke
Michael: This is a tough match for Tanner. I think we see Tanner pull, and defend admirably for a few minutes, but Romulo is gonna get to that knee cut one way or another and pass the guard. Romulo by sub, cross choke from either the knee cut or mount.
Hywel: Ilove seeing Romulo back in action, and I think this is an intriguing challenge for him.
Rice is big, outweighs him by at least 20lbs, and has an underrated game based on really solid technique.
Romulo is famously game though, and I think it took a hefty challenge like Rice to bring him out of the wilderness. His last match, the no-gi bout with Jake Shields at the tail end of 2019, was so long ago and Rice has been in action since then with four matches in 202 alone, although he's 2-2.
Rice does have a win over one of Romulo's guys in Fellipe Trovo, who he outpointed at Worlds last year. I think Romulo will come out motivated, put the pressure on Rice with his infamous kneecut pass and get the sub from top.
Prediction: Romulo via submission
Corey: I can't wait to see this legend back in action!
Romulo may not be competing as much as he once was, but his stable of training partners at Gracie Barra Northridge is one of the toughest in the world. He's jumping up three weight classes to meet Tanner Rice, but I still have him as the favorite.
While Tanner has been able to beat talented guys like Lucas Barbosa, he often falters against top caliber opponents. He is coming off a loss to another medium-heavyweight passing machine in Gustavo Batista, and I think this match will have similar results.
Prediction: Romulo Barral by choke from the back.
Chase: Romulo is back!!
Though he may have taken a step away from full-time competition, Romulo Barral can step up to the challenge at any given time, he just needs the right motivations.
The challenge of taking on Tanner Rice, and the idea that this could serve as a way of giving back to the fans, has propelled Romulo to take his first-ever submission only match – which is freaking awesome.
Rice will have the size advantage, though I'm not entirely suing that will translate to a strength advantage as Romulo is a freaking monster. I see Tanner pulling bottom position and looking to work his 50/50 and spider guard - possibly giving Romulo the gateway to enter his panted kneecut passing system.
Hard to bet against a legend here, I've got Romulo by cross-choke.
Co-Main: Marcio Andre vs Ronaldo Junior
Reid: Although Ronaldo Junior came up on the short end of the stick at Who’s Number One it’s impossible not to be impressed with the young black belt.
Vagner is a tough out for anyone in jiu-jitsu and to come away with only a split decision loss speaks volumes.
On the other hand, Marcio Andre is a much more established black belt with plenty of top-level wins but has struggled against this new generation of talent.
I expect this to be a scrap but I think Ronaldo’s relentless pressure and the endless gas tank will carry him to victory.
Prediction: Ronaldo Junior via triangle
Michael: Interesting match here, as Marcio is normally a featherweight, but his weight fluctuates. Two of the best passers in the game are going head to head here. I'm a huge Marcio Andre fan, but I think Ronaldo's size and strength will be too much and Ronaldo takes a decision victory.
Hywel: This is not a match I expected to see. Marcio is a natural featherweight, maximum lightweight.
Ronaldo has competed middle/medium-heavy, so I anticipate there being a big size difference in this one.
Marcio is incredibly technical and has the ability to go head to head with physical opponents, and I feel that his tricks will help save him against Ronaldo's furious style.
That said, simply surviving isn't enough under F2W rules to earn a win so he'll need to put Ronaldo on the defensive to win a decision. I'm not sure that's possible, I see Ronaldo winning via decision.
Prediction: Ronaldo Junior vs decision
Corey: Find me one match with either of these two athletes that isn't action-packed!
Ronaldo will be hungry for redemption coming off a loss against Vagner Rocha last month, but Marcio Andre has often stifled hungry young black belts on the Fight to Win stage. His last Fight to Win appearance was an action-packed match against Michael Liera Jr, and if Marcio brings the same energy to this contest it should be a high-flying affair.
Still, Marcio is giving up a considerable weight advantage to Ronaldo, and if things get scrambly it should be Ronaldo who comes out on top.
Prediction: Ronaldo Junior by decision
Chase: As mentioned by my colleagues, this will be non-stop action from the jump.
Marcio Andre will almost certainly be undersized but has been facing down the pinnacle of black belt competition for the past six years. With wins over athletes like Paulo Miyao, Cobrinha, and Edwin Najmi, Andre can best anyone in the world on the right day.
But can he stave off the human highlight reel, Ronaldo Junior?
The Atos standout is only just beginning to make his mark on the black belt scene, and he is a whirlwind of energy and ballistic attacks, but I wonder if that will play into Andre's cool, tactical style?
I think this is going to be a grinder of a match, but I could see Andre edging on the win by decision.
