AJ Agazarm (Gracie Barra) took the victory over Ary Farias (Atos) at Fight 2 WIn 133 in Fresno, California, on Saturday night. Manuel Ribamar, Samir Chantre, and others also won big at the promotion’s final event of the year.
To put it simply, the main event was chaotic. But what else should you expect from notorious smack-talker and showman AJ Agazarm? He had been relatively quiet leading up to the event, but he evidently saved all the antics for the night of. After missing the day before weigh-ins (reportedly due to a family emergency) he weighed-in nine pounds over the 155-pound weight agreement, and proceeded to fill the stage with all the things fans love to hate (and hate to love) about him: strutting, crawling, posing, fixing his hair, and, well, no one hates nunchucks, but he brought those into the mix too.
Ary started the match strong, setting the pace by single legging AJ (and Seth Daniels, who was reffing) into the crowd less than 15 seconds into the match. Although AJ was the All-American wrestler, Ary showed he can hang with the best standing or on the ground. Not a minute went by where they two were not attacking each other, so by the end of the match submission attempts were hard to track, but probably about equal.
About halfway through the match Ary began looking fatigued, opting to sit guard, backing up, while AJ began to push the pace eventually passing Ary’s guard, despite a couple kicks to the face. Though it’s usually detrimental, did AJ’s hubris sway the judges and help build his momentum through the match? Submission attempts being about equal, he outpaced two-time World champion Ary Farias for the split decision victory.
