Live Updates
Ricky Nelson vs Fabin Rosa 190lb
We've got a gi match to kick off the action tonight with a couple of veteran black belts– Rosa is a third degree black belt.
Rosa came close to catching what looked like either a triangle or an armlock from the back but they rolled almost off the mat so he got two instead. Two sweeps put him at 6-0 with around two minutes left before thw momentum shifted. Rosa was looking for an estima when Nelson sat up and used an unusual lapel attack to threaten the choke and expose the back. Upon the restart as they neared the edge of the mat the ref noticed Rosa's pants had split and there was a moment of confusion as he desperately ran backstage to find a replacement pair.
The one minute or so break gave these guys chance to catch their breath and the final 50 seconds of the match was a spirited scramble. Final score ended up 8-0 for Rosa.

Bridget Grace vs Maggie Grindatti
The second superfight on the main card sees Renzo / Gregor Gracie-trained brown belt Bridget Gracie, who never stops smiling, vs Maggie Grindatti of Fight Sports.
Maggie's stronger wrestling and base from top gave her the advantage here, as she was able to avoid Grace's sneaky submission setups which included kimuras and armbars from bottom. An early takedown and a guard pass later in he match have her the decisive 5-0 win.
Result: Maggie Grindatti def Bridget Gracie 5-0 – watch video
Semifinal Pro Qualifier: Junny Ocasio vs Richard Alarcon
Both Junny and Richard had fought earlier this evening as part of a 4-man mini-tournament that will see the overall winner qualify for the 135lb tournament in August on KASAI Pro 6. Alarcon defeated Spencer Mumme 18-1, while Ocasio submitted David Weintraub with a heel hook.
The match was extremely close, they were so evenly matched not much happened– until the golden score overtime. Alarcon hit a takedown to secure his position and will join the as-yet-unannounced 8 men as part of the 135lb tournament.
Result: Richard Alarcon def Junny Ocasio via takedown in OT – watch video
Tony Way vs John Lineker 155lb
Hey! Somebody call Eddie Bravo and show him the electric chair Lineker nearly hit– he couldn't quite finish it though. Maybe Bravo can tighten it up. Way's defense was on point and he slapped on a tight inside heel hook for the tap.
Result: Tony Way def John Lineker via inside heel hook – watch video
Matheus Lutes vs Valdir Araujo 175lb
Let's not forget that Lutes is "just" a brown belt, but he's not just a brown belt. He's a KASAI Pro veteran and superfight winner. Araujo is the more experienced black belt but his focus is more on MMA– something that presents its own problems and challenges as the grappling style they develop is based on strong defense and heavy pressure from top.
Lutes was well aware of what kind of grappler Araujo is after watching him at KASAI Pro 5, and was well-prepared for the technical problems he posed. Lutes scored early by sitting up from guard onto a single leg and then attacking a rear naked choke from the crucifix. Araujo's resilience and general toughness came through and he slipped his way out of nearly every one of Lutes' attacks, turning the tables by diving on leglock after leglock.
A tight heel hook had Lutes grimacing, and the effect of the leglock could be seen at the end of the match when the Marcelo Garcia brown belt limped off after getting his hand raised.
Result: Matheus Lutes def Valdir Araujo 6-3 – watch video
Richie Martinez vs Gleison Tibau 180lb
Classic battle of styles here with Boogey playing exclusively from bottom against the rock-solid Tibau. Martinez handled Tibau's physicality and roughness without complaint. In the end the match ended via penalty point after Tibau got a little too aggressive with the hands to the face, and despite the best efforts of both men Martinez couldn't score a solid attack from bottom and Tibau came nowhere near to passing.
Result: Richie Martinez def Gleison TIbau voa 0-0, 0-1 penalty point – watch video
Mansher Khera vs Enrico Cocco 170lb
Both of these guys have extremely fluid open jiu-jitsu and the action was non-stop! They barely stopped moving, and it's difficult to even give a play-by-play– they almost never settled into any one position.
With around 90 seconds left in this scramblefest Khera tangled up a leg and locked on a quick inside heel hook for the tap. You have to wach this one for yourselves.
Result: Mansher Khera def Enrico Cocco via heel hook – watch video
Jorge "Macaco" Patino vs Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante 170lb
A battle of two veteran MMA fighters / jiu-jitsu black belts... JZ's youth and size advantage saw him get mount and set up a solid guillotine, one of the submissions he was best known for during his MMA career. He forced the submission with around 90 seconds left in the match.
Result: Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante def Jorge "Macaco" Patino via guillotine – watch video
Sofia Amarante vs Talita Alencar
Who says lighter athletes can't play pressure? Weighing in yesterday at 118lb Talita looked like a heavyweight when passing against Amarante. Alencar scored two early and kept up the forward pressure, forcing Amarante to give up her back which led to a match-ending amrbar.
Result: Talita Alencar def Sofia Amarante via armbar – watch video
Aaron 'Tex' Johnson vs Craig Jones 205lb
Tex had a simple message for Jones in his pre-match interview– "don't let me break your shit". Jones knows what Tex is capable of, and we've all seen the video of him snapping baseball bats... So it was no surprise Jones dived over Tex's leg attacks in search of the kimura.
The first one didn't work but the second one did– it opened up the back and he was able to secure a rear naked strangle in under two minutes.
When asked who he'd like to face next, Jones answered Kaynan Duarte, but also "Gordon Ryan, but we're teamates these days so I guess that won't happen!"
Result: Craig Jones def Aaron Tex Johnson via rear naked choke – watch video
Celso Venicius vs Vagner Rocha 170lb
I seriously thought that they were going to fall off the mat and destroy my Macbook– they were all over the mat trading takedowns and positions, both getting each other's backs but never quite settling into position long enough to score points.
Celso was running a 2-0 lead for most of the match until the last minute when Rocha managed to get the back. Celso is a master at defending the hooks but Rocha was able to set the second hook along with an armtrap that allowed him to briefly use his (in)famous python choke, the hand over the face.
There was some drama in this match with Vagner getting penalized for talking to the referee and some confusion over reset positions when they went out of bounds.
Result: Vagner Rocha def Celso Vinicius via points 4-2 – watch video
Dante Leon vs Renato Canuto 170lb
You wanted fireworks on the Fourth of July, you got them! Canuto is one of the most exciting no-gi grapplers in the world and he loves playing the showman.
This match had it all– takedowns, flying submissions and more... and unfortunately that "more" turned out to be a very contentious last second takedown by Dante Leon when the clock was 5-4 to Renato.
Dante was convinced he had scored the two literally as time was called, so the referees took the step of checking the video to see exactly what had happened. Did Dante get the takedown, or had Renato pulled guard?
It took a while but the refs studied the video carefully and decided that Renato had indeed pulled.
Watch the video and see for yourself because it is one of those decisions that will divide opinion.
