Fight 2 Win 112 Recap: Arges & Diniz Tune Up For Worlds In Sub-Only Clash
Just 20 days out from IBJJF Worlds, Matheus Diniz and Gabriel Arges met in an intriguing clash of styles, with Arges making his submission-only debut.
Gabriel Arges defeated Matheus Diniz at F2W 112 in Fresno, a performance that earned the black belt Fight of the Night.
The submission-only main event featured Gracie Barra front runner and two-time IBJJF World Champion Gabriel Arges, known for his vicious back takes and sinister guard, against Marcelo Garcia’s top talent, Matheus “King Kong” Diniz, a nickname he earned which speaks for itself!
The match began as a war between the guard of Arges and the steady base of Diniz. Though Arges was intent on creating openings, Diniz did not make that endeavor easy. Submission attempts appeared late in the match, and after some positional exchanges, leg attacks, and even slams, Arges took the victory via unanimous decision.
In jiu-jitsu there is no “off season”. The athlete needs to create structure and prioritize the tournaments most important to him or her. With Worlds just a couple of weeks away, a King of Mats title defense on the line, and already preparing for ADCC this fall, Gabriel Arges has some big aspirations for the coming year.
Though he is ranked no.4 in the medium-heavyweight division he is back to competing at middleweight for Worlds. This was a great victory leading into his 2019 competitive campaign.
Matheus Diniz has been steadily climbing the rankings in the medium-heavyweight division. With just a few weeks before the IBJJF World Championships he has defeated the no.2 medium-heavyweight contender and World champion Gustavo Batista under the Fight 2 Win rules, and improved his ranking position from no.9 to no.5 in the division.
Over the weekend he went the distance in a 10-minute battle with yet another World Champion, Gabriel Arges. Though he lost by unanimous decision Diniz is still on a great trajectory to make his best performance yet at Worlds.
