There is a limit of two competitors per country in each weight division at the Abu Dhabi World Pro. The top-ranked competitor gets placed in the bracket, while the second spot is fought for by all other competitors of the same nationality in a qualifying "Country Bracket".
Here are some of the athletes who will need to qualify to represent their country in the main bracket on Thursday. All Country Qualifiers take place on Wednesday April 24.
Defending Abu Dhabi World Pro champions Joao and Paulo Miyao will have to battle their way through the Brazilian qualifiers at 62 and 69 kg. Paulo has won the Abu Dhabi and London Grand Slams this season, along with the London edition of King of Mats.
Another defending World Pro champion will have to fight through the qualifier at 85 kg in Isaque Bahiense (Alliance). Contending with Bahiense for the second Brazilian spot in this division should be this seasons Los Angeles Grand Slam champion Manuel Ribamar.
Two current World champs will need to qualify in the women’s brackets. Beatriz Mesquita is in at 62 kg, and Nathiely de Jesus is also in the qualifiers at 90 kg.
First-year black belt Kaynan Duarte has won everything so far this year, but will have to get through Renato Cardoso and Jackson Sousa in the 94kg Brazilian qualifier to qualify for the main bracket on Thursday. Erberth Santos awaits whoever comes out of this qualifier in the main bracket.
- Current World silver medalist Joao Gabriel Rocha is in the 110 kg Brazilian qualifier, along with Helton Jose Junior).
- Pan champ Cleber Sousa, World Pro champ Jose Lima and Bebeto Oliveira all are battling for the last Brazilian spot in the main bracket at 56 kg.
- Leo Lara and Caio Almeida, Lucas Rocha and Flavio Vianna need to qualify at 77 kg.
