Tit for tat flying attacks, leg locks and more– the main event between Marcio Andre and Matheus Gabriel at Fight 2 Win 99 was a fast-paced and frantic match that showcased the best submission-only jiu-jitsu has to offer.
Checkmat black belt Matheus Gabriel, a recent addition to the black belt ranks since winning Worlds as a brown belt in 2018, was a late replacement for the injured Michael Liera Jr. and took the match on one week’s notice.
Marcio Andre has been living in Arizona for some time now and this was in effect a hometown match for him. He appeared calm and confident as the match opened, and maybe Gabriel sensed that he would need to go hard to make an impression.
Matheus Gabriel started off the aggressor, hitting a quick sweep via berimbolo (not dead after all?) and testing Andre’s famously flexible guard with estima locks and a near back take via a diving leg drag. A flying armbar had Andre’s arm briefly locked out, but the Nova Uniao black belt quickly answered with a beautiful footsweep to flying triangle.
The match slowed down when Andre started playing his lapel game, and they settled into exchanging leg lock attacks such as straight ankles and toe holds. The clock ran down as they played footsie leaving no easy task for the judges to decide a winner.
All three judges rendered a decision in Marcio Andre’s favor, giving him a solid first win of 2019. Watch all of the match videos from Fight 2 Win 99 here.
Fight 2 Win returns on February 2 with their 100th event, which will take place in Hawaii! Watch it LIVE or On Demand on FloGrappling.
