Simoes has called the jiu-jitsu rich area of the Bay Area home for the last few years. Training out of Caio Terra's gym in San Jose Simoes will have a short drive up to Richmond for the match.
"It’s always nice not having to worry about traveling to compete, and having the friends, students and team mates present supporting," says Simoes. "But I don’t think about it as if I have hometown advantage. In my opinion every match is unique, and anything can happen no matter what city or country you’re competing at."
Spriggs is an opponent who presents a unique challenge. He's known for his intensity and high work rate, and likes to disrupt his opponents' rhythm with his hard and fast attacks. Basically, he will go head on with anybody, and it can overwhelm the unprepared. A two-time ADCC champion and two-time World No-Gi absolute champion Simoes, feels more than ready for this match.
"My mindset is always the same. I train to win, no matter the opponent. When it comes to preparing myself, I am always looking to beat the athlete and martial artist that I was yesterday."
"That being said I’m confident in my grappling game, 100% ready, and I am pumped up for this match! Spriggs is an aggressive athlete and so am I, so we are looking at an intense match for sure."
Simoes will return in December for another go at the 2018 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, which you can watch LIVE on On Demand ONLY on FloGrappling, Dec. 14*-16.
