A quick update from New York where Paulo Miyao is training at Unity Jiu-Jitsu for an upcoming event in South Korea.
Out photographer Michael Sears is in New York shadowing Miyao and the rest of the Unity Jiu-Jitsu crew for a few days.
As always, Miyao is training hard on the well-known white mats of Murilo Santana's Unity Gym on East 37th Street. The latest news is that Miyao is right around 10 days out from Spyder Invitational BJJ Championship.
Miyao will face off with Korean black belt Inseong Jang, who qualified for this event by beating Gracie Barra veteran AJ Agazarm in the previous event. Miyao himself got there by beating Matheus Gabriel of Checkmat. The next event will see Miyao and Jang meet in the semifinals, with the finals on the same night. The other side of the bracket is a match between Japanese disruptor Masahiro Iwasaki and Art of Jiu-Jitsu prodigy Johnatha Alves.
Michael got to chat with Paulo after training was over. This is what he had to say...
You’ve got Spyder coming up on November 3. You’ve done a couple of these events before, what do you think about the Spyder Invitational?
It’s good, I like the people, I like Korea. I think it will be a good show.
How do you like the format? What are the differences competing in this event?
It’s four guys, the semifinal and final. It’ll be a good fight again there.
What about your opponent, Inseong Jang. What do you know about him?
He’s really strong, I saw him fight with AJ last time, he beat AJ. I think it’ll be a good match, I hope to do well.
How do you like competing in Korea? What’s the scene like there?
[The jiu-jitsu scene] is growing there, I’m about to teach two seminars there. I see the guys are really good, they do a good job there. It’ll be a pleasure to fight there again.
