Jansen Gomes from Checkmat took double gold at Juvenile blue belt with a flash and flair to his game that shows much promise.

Gomes– whose older brother is well-known Checkmat competitor Jonata– won one match in his weight division and then three in the absolute, taking all via points. His final with Rayron Gracie was one of the most exciting fights in the division.

Jansen pulled guard on the larger opponent, who weighs in excess of 220lb After several failed attempts to sweep Gracie, he made his way back up to his feet and scored a takedown.

The Checkmat blue belt began to taunt the larger opponent by dancing and cartwheeling around his guard. Gracie was able to catch Jansen midair coming up into a single leg and followed up with a quick blast double that sent them out of bounds. The match ended 2-0 in Jansen’s favor.

The 16-year-old blue belt is a native of the Cantagalo favela, where he trains at the Checkmat Fight Zone in Copacabana. Jansen and his older brother have spent the last year traveling and competing all over the world. After winning Europeans for the second year in a row, Jansen traveled to London where he was secured more gold at the IBJJF London Open and Abu Dhabi Grand Slam London.

Jansen has been training with Leo Vieira in California since the 2018 Worlds and has been taking advantage of every opportunity he can to travel and fight. He  won double gold at Worlds and continued his winning streak by taking home first at American National gi and no-gi in Las Vegas.

Now, Gomes plans on returning to California to see what’s next. Although he is an aggressive fighter, off the mats the young blue belt is reserved and humble. He rarely says much but a friendly wager with Checkmat black belt Alan “Finfou” Nascimento had him grinning from ear to ear as the veteran bet Gomes $100 to win the absolute division, which Gomes cheerfully reminded him of as soon as he came off the mat.
