Rafael Formiga Barbosa improved his Fight 2 Win record to 2-0 after beating Cassio Werneck this evening in Danbury, CT.
Formiga quickly brought the match to the ground after pulling guard right off the bat looking to sweep Weneck with his butterfly hooks. Werneck, however, showed great base and balance refusing to be swept, but found himself in an omoplata early in the match.
After yanking his arm free Werneck began to apply heavy pressure but was swept around the 7-minute mark.
The two then exchanged a series of sweeps until Formiga claimed the top position around the half-way point. From there he was eventually able to pass Werneck’s guard and force him to turtle, nearly taking his back with about 90 seconds left in the bout.
Although unsuccessful in the back take, Formiga was able to maintain a dominant position. He also claimed tight control of Werneck’s left arm in the process, and with just 30 seconds left spun around for a beautiful armbar to get the submission victory.
Even with the loss, Cassio Werneck maintains a winning record of 3-2 in Fight 2 Win competition.
