The match opened with a passing deluge from Tim Spriggs as he hunted for a double under pass for nearly 6 minutes. Neither athlete seemed willing to give way and a stalemate loomed. Sensing that he needed to switch things up or risk a very unsatisfactory referee's decision, Spriggs abandoned the double under pass attempt –but unfortunately for him, exposed an arm in the process – which gave Gutemberg the opportunity to fire off a quick omoplata.
Though Spriggs successfully defended the submission, Gutemberg was able to use the omoplata as a sweep; he secured top position and began raining down his own passing sequences. Spriggs scrambled back to his feet and attempted to employ some attacks of his own, but ultimately was unable to convince the judges that he had done enough.
Gutemberg took the win with a 2-1 split referee's decision to become the new Fight To Win Pro Heavyweight Gi Champion.
