The second day of competition at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam on Saturday saw the conclusion of the black belt finals. There were upsets, submissions, and more than one referee's decision. Here’s how it all played out.

55kg: Jose Carlos Edges Out Advantage Win

Roosterweight ace Jose Carlos Lima took on Massaki Todoroko in a razor-close match that largely took place in 50/50 position. Though the score was high, 8-6, Lima was dictating the pace of the fight and clearly knew when it was time to score. This is his third grand slam gold medal of the season.

62:kg Joao Miyao Hits Toehold On Teammate

Joao Miyao faced his teammate Hiago George yet again in the UAEJJF Grand Slam series. Per the federation rules, there can be no closeouts and the two must fight — which worked out great for Joao, who simply seems to have George's number. He was able to secure the toehold a few minutes into the match for the finish.

69kg: Paulo Miyao Dominates

One of the most anticipated finals of the day was between UAEJJF standout Tiago Bravo and Paulo Miyao, and it did not disappoint. Miyao was all over Bravo early with his relentless De La Riva game and constant Berimbolo threats. Bravo put up an admirable fight, but Miyao was not be denied — he took the win 6-0.

77kg: Flavio Vianna Shuts Down Gile’s Half-Guard 

Australia's Lachlan Giles looked fantastic during the first day of competition but found his half-guard game stifled and shut down by Falvio Vianna. Vianna was able to secure three advantages and the win for his passing attempts.

85kg: Negromonte Earns Decision Win 

In one of the more disappointing matches of the day, Negromonte vs. Bahiense was simply a case of too much respect being shown between the competitors. Largely a stalemate on the feet, Negromonte was awarded the referee’s decision victory — though in our eyes it could have gone either way.

94kg: Helton Silva Defeats Wardzinski 

Adam Wardzinski’s crafty butterfly guard game seemed to place him in the driver's seat for a majority of the 94kg final against Helton Silva Junior, but the Unity Jiu-Jitsu representative from Brazil never gave up and was able to earn a last-minute advantage that tied the score. The judges believed the Brazilian had outworked Wardzinski during regulation and awarded him the decision.

110kg: Igor Silva Puts On A Show 

Heavyweight Igor Silva came out guns blazing in his final match against Mauricio Lima in the 110kg division. He nearly finished the fight in the opening moments with a wicked armbar attempt that saw the pair roll off the side of the raised mat, earning him two points in the process. The rest of the match saw the pair battle it out in 50/50; Igor won by advantage.

Women's Brown And Black Finals

 55kg: Tightly Contested Match Monteiro and Oliveira

This match was an absolute treat to watch. Amanda Monteiro opened the match with blistering passing attempts but never quite stabilized the position, all of which earned her a lone advantage. Oliveira wisely tied up Monteiro with some crafty lapel work and was able to bring the pace of the match back down to a more manageable pace — she came up on a double leg in the dying moments of the match to tie Monetiro on advantages, bringing the match to referee's decision.

In the end, the refs gave Monteiro the nod but it truly could have gone either direction.  

62kg: Baumgarten Puts On A Clinic

If Charlotte Baumgarten wasn't on your radar, she should be now. Fighting out of Germany, Baumgarten was all over Nadia Melo from the opening moment of the fight, threatening submissions and back takes for all five minutes of the round. Melo's experience showed in her composure in the face of danger and her ability to deny any points to actually be scored — for all of Baumgarten's offensive prowess, she was only able to rack up advantages. Still, she dominated the match and should be thrilled with the performance.

90kg: Sam Cook Gets The Submission Victory

Samantha Cook lived up to the hype with a flawless performance in the 90kg final. She took on brown belt Thamara Silva out of Cicero Costha and was able to impose her game without issue. Once Cook took the back, it was all over. She finished the match with a bow-and-arrow choke with 30 seconds left on the clock.
