Caio Terra earned the 125lb Black Belt No-Gi title belt at Fight To Win Pro 57 this evening by beating Marcelo Cohen in a 10-min submission-only no-gi match.

Terra, an 11-time world champion, was the clear favorite this evening in San Jose, but Cohen was not going down without a fight. Although Terra controlled much of the bout with strong positional control and offensive attacks, Cohen showed his jiu-jitsu IQ with quick escapes and electing to play both top and bottom positions.

The CTA leader who is known for his brilliant technique was keen on taking advantage of the sub-only/all submissions legal rule set. It was clear that the legs were his main goal tonight, as he chose to set up the heel hook on more than one occasion.

Cohen was able to thwart off the attacks for some time, but once Terra was able to achieve the inside heel hook position, it was an almost immediate tap from the Florida based black belt.

Terra was awarded the 125lb Fight To Win No-gi title due to tap out by inside heel hook.

Notable Performances

Cassio Werneck displayed beautiful jiu-jitsu this evening, with strong passing and dominant back control, which ultimately led to the submission of Paul Nava in the co-main event of the evening.

Kristina Barlaan was injured in her match with Pati Flores and unfortunately had to be escorted off the mat. Flores had strong control over Barlaan’s legs, threatening her knees and ankles repeatedly before she was forced to forfeit the match via technical submission.

The Rice brothers both went home victorious after younger brother Matthew tapped his opponent with a vicious armbar late into his match, and the older Tanner landed a textbook sweep to armbar for the finish.

Nathan Mendelsohn got the submission victory over the always-game Dom Hoskins but not before a series of hard-fought escapes and a great show of heart by the new NorCal local.
