The Checkmat black belt went to war with Leandro Lo in the IBJJF World Championship final of the absolute division in Long Beach, CA, on Sunday and squeaked out a victory via one penalty point on a scoreboard that was dead equal.
Buchecha's win cements his already solid reputation as one of the greatest black belts to have ever walked the planet.
In the opening-round weight division, Almeida took out Igor Schneider in an unusual match that ended with an 11-7 score in favor of the big man.
He followed this with a submission win versus Joao Gabriel Rocha, weathering an onslaught from the Soul Fighters rep before reversing position, turning the tide, and forcing the tap from mount.
That left a final against Gustavo Elias. Buchecha submitted him with a gi brabo choke from top.
Buchecha is scheduled to compete in three big events over the coming months: a superfight with Roger Gracie on July 23, the IBJJF Heavyweight Grand Prix on August August 26, and ADCC in September.
