All Roads Lead To World Pro Part 3: Rio Grand Slam Retrospective
Romulo Barral unfortunately dislocated his shoulder during a match with Xande Ribeiro, though the injury was not serious and he came back later in the day to win third place.
When the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Jiu-Jitsu Tour traveled to Rio de Janeiro in November, we saw some of the toughest matches of the entire series.
Held at the Rio Olympic Arena, the Rio Grand Slam saw the Gracie Barra powerhouse trio of Romulo Barral, Felipe Pena, and Gabriel Arges compete. However, only one would leave the arena with a medal.
Barral unfortunately dislocated his shoulder during a match with Xande Ribeiro, though the injury was not serious, and he came back later in the day to win third place.
Pena and Ribeiro went head-to-head again following their war in Tokyo, and while Ribeiro seemed to pose Pena some problems with a new strategy, the Gracie Barra black belt managed to find victory once again.
The event saw a number of UAEJJ team members in action, coached by Roberto "Gordon" and Ramon Lemos.
Notable moments from the event included:
• Gabriel Arges getting DQ'd in the 85 gi division for an unintentional knee reap
• Fasial Al-Ketbi's first gold medal as a black belt in a major UAEJJF tournament (no gi -83kg) -- read more
• Celso Vinicius losing in the first round to Gabriel Rollo of Checkmat -- watch video
• And THIS horrific position! -- watch crazy submission attempt
