Fight to Win Pro 27 kicks off in Austin, Texas, on Friday night, and in the main event no-gi world champion Nathiely De Jesus is taking on ADCC medalist Tammy Giego in a heavyweight title bout.
The submission-only gi match has real implications among the ranks in the female division. Griego is a veteran of the competition scene, while De Jesus is still attempting to make a name for herself in her already impressive first year at black belt.
Although the main event serves two elite black belt competitors who have worldwide appeal, Central Texas grappling fans seem to be keeping their eyes on a different matchup.
Travis Moore versus Jose Portillo is a matchup of two young black belts who are finding their footing among the elite grapplers at black belt. Both competitors train in the host city and are no strangers to the local tournament scene -- although the two have never faced before this booking.
Moore is a veteran of FIVE grappling and EBI and trains at John's gym in North Austin. He'll have a number of teammates competing on the card alongside him as well. The last time Fight to Win rolled through the capitol city Moore had one of the most impressive submissions of the night, choking his opponent unconscious with a brutal triangle choke. Watch the clip above.
Portillo is also familiar with the big show after competing at last year's Fight to Win Austin event as well as taking the top prize at Onnit's first invitational, where he submitted both Manuel Ribamar and Ritchie "Boogeyman" Martinez. Portillo represents Paragon Jiu-Jitsu in South Austin.
The two exciting grapplers have contrasting styles that have all the makings for a fight of the night matchup. While Moore is a powerful guard player with quick triangle transitions, Portillo is known to show off his fancy footwork and passing skills. The winner here is sure to cement himself as the most promising prospect in Central Texas.
