Breaking: ADCC Adds 3rd Female Weight Class for 2024 Worlds, Changes Others
After 15 years unchanged, ADCC has added a third female weight class to its World Championship divisions for 2024, and modified the remaining female classes
ADCC officially announced on its Instagram page today that it has modified the female weight categories for the 2024 ADCC World Championship season to include a third weight division.
The promotion will feature a 55kg category in the 2023-2024 season, expanding opportunities to compete for some of the world's most decorated grapplers.
For most of ADCC's 25-year history, the promotion included only two female categories: under 60kg and over 60kg.
In addition to the new weight category, ADCC has changed the two existing weight categories.
The three female weight categories will now be:
- 55kg
- under 65kg
- over 65kg
The newly opened lightest weight category expands opportunities for athletes such as Grace Gundrum, Sophia Cassella, Mayssa Bastos, Jessa Khan, Danielle Kelly and others who have often been outsized in the 60kg divisions.
Meanwhile, the modification of existing weight categories adds an interesting dynamic for the tenured ADCC athletes who will now have to chose between cutting an additional 5kg, or battling up 5kg in weight for the next edition of ADCC Worlds in 2024.
ADCC female weight categories were first introduced in 2005. In 2007, the promotion expanded the number of female categories from two (-60 and 60+) to four (55, 60, -67, 67+).
In 2009, ADCC's returned its number of female categories to two, where it has remained through the 2022 World Championships.
This will be the first alteration to the promotion's weight format in 15 years.
