Mica Galvão is on a path to become one of the biggest stars in jiu-jitsu, but it is time to answer the age old question: does he have the butteriest style in the game today?

I'll start by saying to watch the above highlight from Mica's training session in São Paulo, then tell me what you think of his style.

If you aren’t familiar with the term ‘buttery’ in the sport jiu-jitsu setting — I can’t blame you — I would describe it as constantly being in the right position at the right time with extreme ease. Although we might not have all put the pen to paper and declared someone’s style buttery, we can certainly all recognize it when we see it. Mica is a perfect representation of this.

Mica is as smooth as it gets on the mats. If he isn’t the butteriest, then he is definitely on the shortlist. But, I would have to say that Mica is as buttery as it gets. 

So what makes him so smooth? Among other things, Mica has an insane level of body control that allows him to get into weird, off angles and positions and then attack from those positions with ease. After watching him roll a few rounds, you will notice how he can suddenly attack from virtually any position. Mica always seems to be aware of exactly where he and his opponent’s bodies are at all times, to a precise level. I guess that isn’t too surprising when you are talking about the youngest ever IBJJF World Champion.
